5 Tips: How to Improve Sleeping Habits for Seniors

As our loved one gets older, sleeping can become more challenging. Yet, attaining ample hours of sleep every day is helpful for their overall health. So how do we overcome sleep challenges for our aging loved ones?

Being a provider of adult day care in Madison County, AL, we have the following tips for you. We hope these can help.

  1. Follow a Bedtime Routine

For most of our aging loved ones, routines have already been established in their lives. But, if their routines keep them from having a good sleep, help them reestablish new ones. For at least two weeks, urge your loved one to stick to their sleeping hours; to sleep and wake up at the same time, even on weekends.

  2. Refresh Before Going to Bed

As a provider of home care services in Huntsville, Alabama, we also say that feeling refreshed can help a person to fall asleep faster. So that your elderly family member can sleep better, help them get a warm bath. If not, wipe their body with a warm cloth so they can get into fresher sleeping clothes.

  3. Relax

It is also very helpful to get into sleep mode when we have relaxed. For our elderly family members, set this mode on by playing some soothing music and dimming the lights. With a relaxed atmosphere, sleeping is less disturbed.

  4. Avoid Caffeinated Drinks

Our aging loved may love coffee or tea. Yet, these drinks can energize them. Let them have these drinks at around breakfast and not before bedtime. This way, they will not be kept awake by the caffeine.

  5. No to Afternoon Naps

If your senior loved one wants to nap in the afternoon, let them do another engaging activity instead. With companionship from a personal care provider, they can do arts and crafts, go for a walk, or finish other healthy activities. If they don’t nap, they can sleep better at night.
